Phoenix Open golfest set March 6 at Palos

ONE million pesos in cash, a Kia Picanto, a Footon Blizzard and other valuable prizes are up for grabs in the 2nd Phoenix Open which tees off March 6 at the Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club.

A stylish dual-sim Cherry Mobile R007 phone will be given away to every participant in the event, which is being held to highlight the Araw ng Dabaw celebration.


Phoenix Petroleum Philippines Luzon brand and marketing associate Koyen Cipriano said around 250 golfers from all over the country are competing in the one-day tournament.

"Players are from all over Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao are coming for this golf for a cause tournament that will benefit the charities of Phoenix Foundation. While some golfers who are also our business partners enjoy playing at the golf course, they also get to support the foundation," Cipriano said during the regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum Thursday at the Tower Inn.

Cipriano said each player's registration fee of P3,000 will all go to the Foundation.

Corporate media affairs head Ben Sur said Phoenix president Dennis Uy and chief operations officer Romy de Guzman will be on hand for the ceremonial tee-off of the golfest that offers P1M cash, a Kia Picanto, a Foton Blizzard as hole-in-one prize in all par 3 holes.

"We have improved from the first year we staged the tournament. We will make this an annual event in celebration of the Araw ng Dabaw and we will do our best to improve and become bigger every year," Sur said.

He said Royal Selangor Pewter Plate will also be awarded to the team and individual winners of the 18-hole systems 36 team and individual competition.

The event will have a shotgun tee-off set at 5:30 a.m. and at 10:30 a.m.

Awarding rites will be held at the RPVGCC clubhouse at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

PSA to honor Dabawenya

The Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) will be honoring national players including a Dabawenya who won gold medals in the 25th Southeast Asian Games on December 9 to 18 last year in Vientiane, Laos.

The PSA Awards Night presented by Coca-Cola is on March 1 at the Manila Hotel.

Golfer Chihiro Ayuban Ikeda of Davao City will be among the gold medallists to be honored by the oldest sportswriting fraternity. She bagged a gold in the women's individual category and helped the team win to share the team gold medal award.

For that feat, she received P300,000 for winning the individual gold and another P100,000 for a share of the team award from the Philippine Sports Commission (P100,000), Sports Benefits and Incentives Act of 2001 (P100,000) and from the private sector (P100,000).

President Gloria M. Arroyo is the invited special guest of the Awards Night presented by by Smart, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Pacific Online System Corporation, Harbour Centre and the Philippine Charity Sweeptakes Office.

Under the National Athletes, Coaches and Trainers Benefits and Incentives Act, other SEA Games medallists will also receive cash rewards. P50,000 will go to the silver medallists and P10,000 for the bronze medallists.

Other Dabawenyos who harvested medals in the biennial meet were Gandy "Yang-Yang" Valle (silver, men's 8-ball pool singles ), Shiela Mae Perez (silver, women's 3-meter springboard diving), Niño Carog (2 silvers,men's 3-meter springboard individual and 3-meter springboard synchronized diving), Zardo Domenios (silver, men's 3-meter springboard synchronized diving), Rexel Ryan Fabriga (silver, men's 10-meter platform synchronized diving and bronze, men's 10-meter platform), Jaime Asok (silver, men's 10-meter platform synchronized diving), Ruth Dugaduga (silver, women's judo 70 to 78 kilogram division), Frazier, Norton and Dexter Alamara (team silver medal, water polo).

The Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) is a member of the PSA.

Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum at PSC Dining Hall

THE PSA Forum is scheduled to hold its first session for the year 2010 on January 5 at the dining hall of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) at the first floor of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
Appearing as special guest in the 10:30 a.m. session is Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) executive director Ed Picson as he talks about the plans of the RP boxing team in the aftermath of its successful five-gold medal haul in the recent 25th Southeast Asian Games in Laos.
The weekly public sports program returns to its regular venue at the Shakey’s U.N. Avenue branch next week.

Arnis official to grace DSA Forum

Arnis Philippines Davao City commissioner Mario Palazuelo will be the main guest of the DSA Forum on Thursday, November 19, at the Tower Inn.

He will promote the Carambunal Tournament on November 21, a tournament in preparation for the National Arnis Encounter.
