THE Notre Dame of Marbel University (NDMU) will defend its title when the 7th Dolan Sprint sa Kadayawan Inter-School Swimming Competition plunges into action on Saturday starting at 8 a.m. at the Ladislawa Garden Village clubhouse in Buhangin.
Chief organizer Darren Evangelista of the Evangelista Aquatics and Sports Management Inc. (Easmi), appearing in Thursday's regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, said NDMU is fielding some 50 swimmers in the event.
"It's one huge field where Davao bets will have to face stiff competition not only from NDMU but also those coming from Polomolok, General Santos City and Kidapawan City. I think that region alone has three Palarong Pambansa champions who will compete," Evangelista said.
He said they are expecting some 130 tankers from all over the region in the event presented by Dolan in cooperation with Growee Multivitamins.
"A total of 50 events are entered in the one-day event featuring the six years old and under, seven to nine, 10-12, 13-14 and 15-above categories," Evangelista said.
He said the top three teams based on points will receive trophies. He added a gold medal is equivalent to seven points, a silver is worth seven points and bronze is six points. Points of five, four, three, two and one will be awarded to the next five finishers in every event.
"Gold, silver and bronze medals will also be given away to the top three placers. The most outstanding swimmer per category, however, will still be determined based on the total number of points. A participant can only swim up to five events though," Evangelista said.

9th Flight of Eagles, Kadayawan bowling tourney set
9th Flight of the Eagles bikefest set to take off
ORGANIZERS will give away cash prizes to special awardees when the 9th Flight of the Eagles blasts off from the People's Park to Malagos Park in Calinan on Sunday.
Co-organizer Dominador A. Lopez, chair of the Watershed Management Coordinating Council, said Thursday the biggest delegation, family finisher riders, oldest rider, youngest rider, heaviest rider, heaviest bike and lightest bike are the special prizes to be given out.
"Cash prizes will also be awarded to the top three finishers of the fun race for junior below 17 years old and below, masters 40-above and fat boys rider 100 kilograms above and fat look categories," Lopez said during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.
He said some 540 cyclists riders are expected to join the 40-kilometer fun ride that is dubbed, "Biking for the Watersheds of Davao."
Lopez said former city councilor Leonardo Avila III, who spearheaded the event for the past eight years, will give the welcome remarks during the brief opening rites while current Davao City Councilor Marissa Salvador Abella, 1977 Mutya ng Dabaw, will flag off the riders.
Abella, chair of the City Council committee on environment and natural resources, had taken on Avila's program being a staunch advocate of environment protection herself.
Reigning Mutya ng Dabaw Jenelle Lee will also be among the guests during the affair.
The fun ride is also backed up by the Davao City Water District (DCWD), Federation of Off-Road Cycling Enthusiasts (Force), WMCC, Office of Councilor Abella and Avila, among others.

Organizing Sunday Bowlers Club (SBC) president Emie Orteza, gracing Thursday's regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, said the champion will receive P8,000 while the next three placers will go home with P5,000, P3,000 and P2,000, respectively.
He said they expect some 20 teams seeing action in the bowlfest that will also hold a masters game.
"There will be a qualifying event for the masters game set next Thursday. Prizes also await the highest pinning, highest individual single and double, highest team single and double and highest average," Orteza said.
He added that regular players from Cotabato are coming but they will be joining in other Davao City teams.
The meet, which will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays for two weeks, is organized in celebration of the 25th Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival. (MLSA)

Emcor to hold Pro-Am golfest
SOME 100 professional golfers from all over the country will team up with amateur players when the Davao Pro-Am Golf Tournament tees off from September 1 to 3 at the scenic Apo Golf and Country Club.
Tournament coordinator Elias "Boy" Arriba, speaking at the regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum Thursday at the Tower Inn, said the event is sponsored by Samsung in coordination with Emcor, which is celebrating its 52nd anniversary this year.
"This is the first time we will hold this kind of tournament. We are very excited to bring a handful of noted pro golfers from Manila and other parts of the Visayas and Mindanao," said Arriba, Emcor vice president for marketing.
He named Juvic Pagunsan and the Miñoza brothers as among those who are expected to join the three-day competition.
The top 30 pros will receive cash prizes, with the top placer receiving P172,000 while the 30th placer will not go home empty-handed with P16,000.
"We will have motorcycles and appliances as hole-in-one prizes," Arriba said.
He added that Emcor is looking forward to hold the golf tournament every year as a way of paying back to their clients.
"It is our desire to help promote professional and amateur golf in this region through organizing tournaments like this," Arriba said.
The tournament as well as the 3rd JVR Cup Badminton Tournament meet set to be held on Saturday at the Smash N' Drop Badminton Courts are organized as part of the month-long celebration of Emcor's 52nd anniversary.
Giovanni Molina said the badminton event will feature men's doubles and women's doubles for level E and F and mixed CD categories.
"We expect at least 60 players in this competition where cash prizes will be given away to the winners," Molina said.
He aid the non-profit meet will benefit the preservation of the environment that is part of Emcor's corporate social responsibility.
Emcor also plans to conduct a mangrove-planting activity and encourage its participants to join the undertaking.

A TOTAL cash prize of P60,000 is up for grabs when the 1st Kadayawan Festival Cup (KFC) Wakeboarding Competition plunges into action on August 20 at the world-class Deca Wakeboard Park (DWP) in Barangay Tacunan, Mintal.
Carive Rodriguez, gracing the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday, said P30,000 worth of giveaways are also at stake for the participants.
"The DWP had been around for eight months now and we have seen that it's about time to give local riders a chance to compete against themselves," Rodriguez said.
He said they expect some 60 adult and kid competitors in the one-day free admission event that will have varied categories for different age-groups.
"We are holding this event in celebration of the Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival and at the same time give awareness to Dabawenyos and Mindanaoans on the sport of wakeboarding," Rodriguez said.
He said participants will be judged according to their tricks and stunts and how they go about all the obstacles.
"We have top-notch riders from Manila who have placed in national and international competitions as our guest judges," Rodriguez said.
Jason Poblete said a photo competition for photographers will be a side event. Cash prizes will also be awarded to the winners of the photo contest.
Poblete said DWP is the third wakeboard park in the Philippines and the only one in Mindanao. The first one built was the Lago de Oro in Batangas and second was in Camarines Sur.
Entry fee for the wakeboard competition, which is presented by DWP with 8990 Housing Development Corporation, is P500 for all categories. (MLSA)

Newly-elected Davao City Councilor Marissa Salvador Abella, chair of City Council committee on environment and natural resources, yesterday said she had taken on the program of former city councilor Leonardo Avila III as she is also a staunch advocate of environment preservation.
"The past eight years with Councilor Avila, the Flight of the Eagles raised funds for the Talomo-Lipadas Watershed and raised awareness on the more environment friendly and health -- conscious mode of transportation -- mountain biking. I'm continuing his cause because I'm an advocate for the protection of the environment," Abellas said in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.
Abellas said the 40-kilometer fun ride will commence with a program, lunch and fellowship at the Davao City Water District Amphitheater, Malagos, Baguio District.
Dubbed "Biking for the Watersheds of Davao", the event will feature a fun race in the last four kilometers before reaching Malagos Park.
Categories are junior below 17 years old, masters 40 and above and fat boys rider (100 kgs. above and fat look). Cash prizes await winners. Awards will also be given to the oldest, youngest and heaviest rider, heaviest bike and lightest bike. (MLSA)

IT'S all systems go for the 1st Mayor Inday Sara Cup Level 2 Rifle & Pistol Kadayawan Shooting Competition that fires off on August 20 to 22 at the CPR Shooting Range along Diversion Road.
Organizer Maikee Aportadera said the event aims to attract at least 200 participants from all over the country.
"Some 40 rifle and pistol shooters from Cebu are coming while Jethro and Magno teams from Manila are also expected to compete. The Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Navy and Philippine Air Force will also send delegates while some 100 civilians will also show their wares," Aportadera told members of the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) during their weekly forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.
He said the pistol category will be a seven-stage competition while the rifle division will be a six-stage event. Both are sanctioned by the Philippine Practical Shooting Association (PPSA).
The shootfest is an official event of the 25th Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival. (MLSA)

THE Kadayawan Judo-Jiu Jitsu Tournament and 2nd TKS Petron Inter-School Karatedo Age-Group Championships will kick off on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, at Campo Agua in Toril.
Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK) Davao head Rommel Tan said this is the second year they are holding a back-to-back tournament with Paolo Tancontian of judo/jiu jitsu.
"We are very happy with the outcome of our events last year that's why we have decided to hold a similar activity this year as a pre-Kadayawan feature," Tan said.
Tan, who guested at the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn yesterday, said Davao City's eight national champions bound for Singapore in September will join the weekend competition.
"This will serve as a tune-up tournament for them. We have some 70 participants in karatedo alone with visiting teams from Bukidnon and General Santos City. The Pagadian team has yet to confirm," he said.
Tan said the upcoming karatefest is designed for student players although he said AAK also holds open tournaments where out-of-school youths can also join. (MLSA)

THE 7th Languyan sa Kadayawan will take the plunge on August 28 at the Ladislawa Country Club in Buhangin.

Evangelista said teams from the Davao Region and regular campaigners like those from General Santos and Koronadal are seeing action in the one-day meet.
"The first three finishers in each event will receive gold, silver and bronze medals while trophies will be given to fastest swimmer awardees," he said.
He added that plans to hold a shoreline swimming event and a Tropang Growee Junior Golf Tournament sometime in September are already in place. (MLSA)
