Singapore team to beat in PH Open Tchoukball, Prisaa meet opens at UM, Rapid chessfest set

Singapore team to beat in PH Open Tchoukball

THREE teams from Singapore are seeing action in the first-ever Philippine Open Tchoukball Championships on January 28 to 30 at the Davao City Recreation Center.

Philippine Tchoukball Federation (PTF) president Gary Visitacion, gracing yesterday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, said Malaysia and Taiwan begged off in the last minute leaving only Singapore as the foreign team in the event.

"Singapore is competing in men's, juniors and women's divisions," Visitacion said.

He said Bacolod will also field three teams while the rest of the participants will come from the host city.

"We expect Singapore to dominate the competition, though, but it will be exciting to see Bacolod and Davao teams vie for the second spots. Davao's juniors team is stronger now than when it competed in the Asia Pacific Championships in Singapore last year," Visitacion said.

PTF vice president Blair Cuares confirmed that Davao's 18-under team has improved a lot and is expected to pull off surprises in the tournament.

"This tournament will be a great tune-up for our country's teams in upcoming international meets considering that Singapore is Asia's No. 2 team," Cuares said.

Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte had been invited as guest speaker in the opening rites of the event that expects some 200 players, coaches and officials. (MLSA)

Prisaa meet opens at UM

DAVAO City will open its bid to keep the overall title when the 2011 Regional Prisaa Meet opens at 9 a.m. today at the University of Mindanao (UM) Matina Gym.

A brief opening ceremony will usher in the three-day event with Commission on Higher Education (Ched) regional director Edward Aquino as guest speaker.

Executive director Edgardo "Bing" Grandeza yesterday said games in all events will start in the afternoon, with some 1,000 athletes from all over the region figting it out for slots in the national finals.

Most events, including volleyball, basketball, tennis, chess, table tennis, sepak takraw, athletics and softball will be played at UM Matina while swimming will plunge into action over DMMA College of Southern Philippines, taekwondo at NCCC Mall of Davao and football at the Tionko football grounds.

Other events entered are boxing, judo and beach volleyball, among others.

Slots to the national finals slated February 21 to 28 are up for grabs in the regional qualifying that will also have delegations coming from Davao del Sur and Davao del Norte.

Davao City is expected to dominate the sportsfest but Davao del Norte will try to keep its boxing and beach volleyball title.

In chess, Davao City coach National Master (NM) Prospero "Bebot" Cruz said they are ready to defend their crown in the men's and women's teams.

"We have a very strong line up this year. Our men's squad may even contend for the gold in the national finals," Cruz said.

Cruz, appearing in the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn yesterday, said the Cor Jesu College of Digos-bannered Davao del Sur may be their stiffest rival.

Cruz said Cor Jesu is coached by veteran chesser Jimmy Dano. "They have a very strong chess program and a very good coach," he said. (Charles Raymond A. Maxey)

Davao's Ambasa, Nerza to join more races

CEBU City Marathon 2011 women's champion Monalisa Ambasa and men's fourth-placer Anthony Nerza of Davao City vowed to run more races this year following their recent feats.

Ambasa, the 27-year-old ace from Toril, said she will take a short break before she joins another 42-kilometer race in the Condura Skyway Marathon slated February 6 in Manila.

Ambasa said she won't run any race the next two weeks but she might enter the Holiday Run for Healthy Living on January 30 as a tune-up event for the Condura.

"I am only limiting myself to join three full marathons a year. I had my first in Cebu then Condura as my second. I'm looking forward to race in the National Milo Marathon again for my last 42K. I would then join shorter races in between," Ambasa told members of the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum during their weekly forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.

Ambasa finished fourth in the National Milo Marathon last year.

Nerza, a varsity trackster from Brokenshire College, said his immediate race will be the Run To Serve for the benefit of the Psoriasis Club of the Southern Philippines Medical Center on January 16. He will also don the city's colors in the National Collegiate Games Regional Meet on January 21 to 23 where he is entered in the men's 5K and 10K events.

"It will be my first time to compete in the regional meet. I hope I'll make it through the nationals and perhaps win a gold," Nerza said.

Nerza, a 2007 Palarong Pambansa gold medalist, placed fifth in the men's 42K event of the 2010 National Milo Marathon held on December 12.

He also said he will continue to join every local race he could get his hands on to keep him fit and ready for future bigger competitions. (MLSA)

Prisaa meet opens January 21

SLOTS to the National Collegiate Games are up for grabs when the Regional Meet unfolds on January 21 to 23 at the University of Mindanao (UM) Matina campus in Davao City.

Region 11 Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) assistant executive director Joaquin "Boy" Sarabia, appearing in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, said the regional finals serves as a selection process for the national event.

Greet your friends and families this Sinulog season. Sun.Star covers Sinulog 2011 live!

"We will choose the best and top players for every team and for every individual event to boost our chances in the national championship set on February 20 to 26 in Manila." Sarabia said.

He said the annual sportsfest is now called NCG as it covers not just the Prisaa but also the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (Scuaa) and the Local Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (LCUAA).

But, he said Prisaa still runs the operations of the city and regional qualifying as well as the national finals.

Though defending champion Davao City is expected to dominate most events, Sarabia said Davao del Norte is still the team to beat in boxing and beach volleyball.

"Davao del Norte won for the region the gold medals in boxing and beach volleyball in the National Ched Palaro last year. They are most likely to defend their crowns both in the regional and national meets this year," Sarabia said.

Davao City's men's and women's judo teams from UM and Holy Cross of Davao College, however, are strong forces to reckon with as they too are national defending champions.

The host city, composed of 18 member schools, will also try to keep its reign in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's chess, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's badminton, men's and women's table tennis, men's and women's taekwondo, men's sepak takraw, men's baseball, women's softball and men's football, men's and women's swimming and men's and women's athletics, among others.

Davao del Sur, meanwhile, may put up a good showing in athletics.

Swimming will be held at the DMMA College of Southern Philippines while taekwondo will be played at the NCCC Mall of Davao and the rest of the action will be at UM Matina.

The annual event also features academic and cultural competitions. (Marianne Saberon-Abalayan)

Shakey's to hold girls' volleyball, 'Run to Serve' fires off Jan. 16

PREPARATIONS are underway for the Shakey's Girls Volleyball League Mindanao leg, which opens either on January 29 or February 5 in a still undetermined venue.

Leg director Darren Evangelista, president of the Evangelista Aquatics and Sports Management Inc., made the announcement Thursday during the regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.

Evangelista said the Mindanao leg will run up to two months unlike those in Luzon and the Visayas where the tournament will be held for only five days.

"We are working it out to hold our leg here during weekends so classes of players won't be disturbed. A longer tournament will also do more good to the players who will benefit from the competition. They will be given enough exposure and training and their skills will be honed," Evangelista said.

An all-expense-paid round trip to the national finals in Bacolod City sometime in March is at stake for the champion team, according to Evangelista.

Reigning champion Davao City National High School (DCNHS) earned an automatic slot in the meet with 10 to 12 teams competing.

DCNHS represented the region in the nationals last year with two reinforcements from Ateneo de Davao University volleyball squad. (MLSA)

This is also an advocacy campaign about the skin disease and that persons inflicted by it can still move on with their lives," Lagert said during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn yesterday.

Lagaret maintained that psoriasis is not infectious and its cure hasn't yet been known. But she said they have been helping their some 70 patients with coping mechanisms and ways to alleviate their conditions.
