Shakey's to hold girls' volleyball, 'Run to Serve' fires off Jan. 16

PREPARATIONS are underway for the Shakey's Girls Volleyball League Mindanao leg, which opens either on January 29 or February 5 in a still undetermined venue.

Leg director Darren Evangelista, president of the Evangelista Aquatics and Sports Management Inc., made the announcement Thursday during the regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.

Evangelista said the Mindanao leg will run up to two months unlike those in Luzon and the Visayas where the tournament will be held for only five days.

"We are working it out to hold our leg here during weekends so classes of players won't be disturbed. A longer tournament will also do more good to the players who will benefit from the competition. They will be given enough exposure and training and their skills will be honed," Evangelista said.

An all-expense-paid round trip to the national finals in Bacolod City sometime in March is at stake for the champion team, according to Evangelista.

Reigning champion Davao City National High School (DCNHS) earned an automatic slot in the meet with 10 to 12 teams competing.

DCNHS represented the region in the nationals last year with two reinforcements from Ateneo de Davao University volleyball squad. (MLSA)

'Run to Serve' fires off Jan. 16

ORGANIZERS are eyeing 1,000 participants when the Run To Serve 2011 kicks off at 5 a.m. on January 16 in and out-and-back course at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) grounds.

Dr. Liza Mae Lagaret of the organizing SPMC dermatology department Thursday said the event is the very first of its kind initiated by their office.

"This is a fund-raising activity that will benefit the psoriasis patients of SPMC. This is also an advocacy campaign about the skin disease and that persons inflicted by it can still move on with their lives," Lagert said during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn yesterday.

Lagaret maintained that psoriasis is not infectious and its cure hasn't yet been known. But she said they have been helping their some 70 patients with coping mechanisms and ways to alleviate their conditions.

The fun run features the 10K and 5K open categories as well as the 3K for 12 years old and below.
