Shakey's V-league to include Southeast Asian Club Invt'l

Plans are now afoot to integrate the Southeast Asian Club Invitational as part of the Shakey’s V-League calendar possibly starting next year.
Officials behind the success of the pioneering women’s volleyball tournament in the country admitted that the proposal is currently being considered in the light of the warm reception being given to the inaugural staging of the four-day club championship that features the national teams of Vietnam and Malaysia.
V-League Season 8 champions Philippine Army and Ateneo de Manila complete the four-team cast that formally kicks off this tomorrow with an exciting doubleheader at The Arena in San Juan.
“Right now, we’re trying to restructure the Shakey’s V-League and see how we can incorporate the SEA club championship in our year-long calendar,” bared Moying Martelino, chairman of the organizing Sports Vision, during the PSA weekly Forum at Shakey’s U.N. Ave.
Since the V-League 1st conference is being held every summer, Martelino said they are eyeing to make it an all-school competition, while the second conference will feature a mixture of invited club teams and schools which are willing to participate as in the case of Season 8’s final offering where corporate squads such as Maynilad, Air Force and Army saw action.
“And then we’ll cap off the year with an invitational tournament pitting our local teams opposite club champions from Southeast Asia,” added Sports Vision president Ricky Palou, who was also present during the session presented by Smart, PAGCOR, Outlast Battery, and Shakey’s, together with tournament commissioner Tony Boy Liao and Philippine Army coach Rico De Guzman.
“It’s good for our teams to be exposed in this kind of tournament,” Liao stressed.
Martelino expressed his gratitude to Shakey’s for making the club invitational possible, which he said cost one of the country’s largest pizza restaurant chain around P3 million for its staging.
“So let’s see what happens next year,” the Sports Vision president added.
Both foreign teams are already here in the country, arriving one after the other late Tuesday afternoon.
Vietnam, silver medal winner in the 2009 SEA Games in Laos, will be reinforced by two Russian players in Anactaxia Trernai and Ekoterina Martynova.
“Kailangan talagang pag-handaan ito, lalo na `yung Vietnam kasi sobrang lakas nila,” said De Guzman, whose Army squad will banked on former national team members Cristina Salak, Michelle and Marietta Carolino, Mary Jean Balse, and guest players Rachel Ann Daquis, Jennelyn Reyes, and Nerissa Bautista.
Handled by coach Roger Gorayeb, Ateneo is leaning on stalwarts Alyssa Valdez, Fille Cainglet, Jamenea Ferrer, and Angeline Marie Gervacio.
Opening day games will have Army taking on Malaysia at 2 p.m., followed by the tussle between Vietnam and Ateneo (4 p.m.).
The following day, it’s Ateneo against Malaysia (2 p.m.) and Army opposite Vietnam (4 p.m.), before Ateneo clashes with Army (2 p.m.) and Vietnam battles Malaysia (4 p.m.) on the final day of the preliminaries.
A single battle for third place, and the winner-take-all Finals are set on Sunday.(pr)

Thailand remains team to beat, says Go

THE Philippines will have its hands full as it vies for the gold medal in athletics, the centerpiece event of the 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia in November.
Go Teng Kok, president of the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association, told Tuesday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s UN Avenue that Thailand remains the team to beat.
“In Southeast Asia it’s still Thailand. Then there’s Vietnam and Indonesia. But we’re catching up along with Malaysia,” said the long-time head of Philippine athletics.
But the Patafa chief, who promised his all-out support to his so-called GTK Army, said the Philippines will be good for six or seven of the 46 gold medals at stake in athletics.
“I told all my athletes that I’ll give them all the support they need as long as they show their commitment for the country. And they all responded positively,” he said.
The Filipinos won seven gold, three silver and four bronze medals in the 2009 SEA Games in Laos, and is once again expected to provide the most number of medals for the country in November.
“We won seven gold medals the last time. Of this seven, I’m counting on six to defend the their crowns. Then maybe we can pull off some surprises in the other events,” said Go.
Gold medal winners for Phl in 2009 were Rene Herrera (3000-m steeplechase), Eduardo Buenavista (men’s marathon), Arniel Ferreira (hammer throw), Danilo Fresnido (javelin), Joan Banayag (women’s marathon), Marestella Torres (long jump) and Rosie Villarito (javelin).
Go said he has 24 young and promising athletes, aged 18 to 22 years, who can pull off a surprise in Indonesia, considering that they’ve already won medals in international competitions.
He was referring to Nino Espinosa (long jump), Jayson Ramil Sid (400 meters and 400m long hurdles) and Eliezer Sunang (shotoput) who all performed well in the recent Vietnam Open.
Head coach Josehy Sy said these athletes have shown tremendous improvement over the recent months, and by the time the SEA Games are held, they could be ready for battle.
“These are our future champions so I’m now appealing to the Philippine Sports Commission to include them in the national pool. Right now, they are on their own, and we at Patafa spend for them,” said Go.
Go did not identify the other athletes who can win medals in Indonesia because he’d rather wait for the actual competition. He said other Southeast Asian countries were surprised to see how these young athletes performed in Vietnam.
“They kept on asking who these athletes are and where they came from. They didn’t even know them and they won medals in Vietnam. I want them to be as surprised in the SEA Games,” he said.
“If these athletes continue to show improvement heading to the SEA Games, I promised them I would take them there,” added Go.(PSA PR)

Guangzhou Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar banners the six-man squad coached by Ronald Chavez and Roel Velasco, bronze medal winner in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
And the group declares the 15-year-old Marcial is a big inspiration to them to do better in the August 5-13 meet.
“Yun din ang goal natin ang makakuha ng gintong medalya, dahil nagsisilbing inspirasyon si Eumir sa mga bata nating boksingero at mga seniors,” said men’s head coach Pat Gaspi in a rainy PSA Forum session yesterday at Shakey’s U.N. Ave. where Marcial joined the boxing delegation.
Added Gaspi, “sabi nga namin, kung nakaya niya (Marcial), mas maganda ang pag-asa ng elite team natin.”
On Saturday, Marcial, a native of Zamboanga, made history by becoming the first Filipino to win a gold medal in the world junior championship in Astana, Kazakhstan, highlighting his exploit with a 9-7 victory over Onat Cengiz of Turkey in the 52 kg. final.
A third-year high school student in Baguio, the soft-spoken teener, coached and trained by three-time Olympian Romeo Brin, said his triumph hopefully, will translate into more golds in the future, specifically in the Olympics.
“Yun lang naman po ang pangarap natin, ang maka-gold sa Olympics at makatulong sa pamilya ko,” said Marcial, who was joined in the forum presented by Smart, PAGCOR, Outlast Battery, and Shakey’s by his father Eulalio, a barangay tanod and occasional boxing trainer, and mother Carmencita, a plain housewife.

Chavez said Marcial’s victory serves the boxing team in good stead, although he stressed competition in the Asian tilt is expected to be very tough.
“Hindi natin maaalis yung mga `tan’ countries (Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan), siyempre, andiyan din `yung host country, China, and Thailand, kung pinayagan na sila ng AIBA na mag-compete,” added Chavez.

The showing of the six Filipino pugs will also be used as benchmark for their possible inclusion in the World Boxing Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan this September.
The meet serves as one of two qualifiers for the 2012 London Olympics.
“Kung maging maganda ang performance nila ditto sa Asian Boxing Championships, malaki ang posibilidad na makasama rin sila sa team for the world championship,” Chavez said.

Sharks aim nothing but four-peat

FRESH from their third straight title conquest, the Manila Sharks is aiming nothing but an immaculate four-peat in Baseball Philippines Series 9.
Harbour Centre Manila Sharks general manager Rich Cruz said the hunger factor is still there for the team to go all out for another historic milestone, which is claiming their fourth consecutive title in the country’s major baseball league.
“We definitely want to win again,” said Cruz in yesterday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum at the Shakey’s UN Avenue. “Many are asking if we are still hungry for another title but the challenge will still be there.”
The Sharks swept the Series 8 best-of-three title showdown after a 10-4 victory over the Cebu Dolphins in Game 2 last Sunday to claim a remarkable third straight crown.
For his part, Manila head coach Jhoel Palanog said they will definitely build a strong line-up for next series.
“Kailangan na rin natin i-explore ‘yung ganung option na mag-hire ng bagong players kasi may mga players na balak ng mag-retire. Malaking tulong ang maibibigay nila sa team,” said Palanog, who was also joined by former University of Mindanao-Davao Series 8 Finals Most Valuable Player Saxon Omandac, Jon Jon Robles and Marvin Malig in the session presented by Smart, PAGCOR, Outlast Battery, and Shakey’s.
Cruz said they have already scouted some Fil-Ams who could possibly be part of the team for Series 9 although they are not in a hurry to recruit reinforcement.
“We will still be gauging how well they can play because as you can see during the Series 8, Filipinos can compete very well with the Fil-Ams,” said Cruz.
Robles said the three-peat would not have been possible without the support of the coaches, teammates and their sponsor.
“Maganda ang samahan ng mga players at coaches. Ang suporta ng Harbour Centre, talagang halos lahat binigay nila kaya nagpapasalamat ako sa kanila,” said Robles.(PSA PR)

Azkals manager expresses confidence

PHILIPPINE Azkals manager Dan Palami on Tuesday expressed confidence that they can produce a better result than the 0-3 defeat they absorbed to Kuwait in the home leg of their second round World Cup Qualifying at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on Thursday.
“I think it will be a better match for us,” said Palami during the PSA Forum yesterday at the Shakey's U.N. Avenue in Manila.
Palami's confidence stems from the return of skipper Aly Borromeo and midfielder Stephan Schrock, who sat out the first leg in Kuwait City because of suspension, and the fact that the Azkals will be playing at home.
The Azkals have not lost at home since 2006.
“We have a stronger lineup and I think we can compete with them in the midfield and in defense,” said Palami. “We hope the crowd will be a factor. Hopefully, it will intimidate the Kuwaitis and lift the spirits of our players.”
The Azkals manager hinted that there might be no change in approach for the Azkals, who were unlucky not to go ahead in the first half, before yielding two goals in the second half.
“We will stick to the game plan. We had a good first half against Kuwait even though we played defensive. When we got adventurous, that's when they killed us,” Palami observed.
But Palami pointed out that there are still alot of positives from the loss to what he called an Asian powerhouse.
“Kuwait has been in the World Cup. They are really a strong team and competing with them is a testament on how the sport has developed here in the country,” he added in the same session presented by Smart, PAGCOR, Outlast Battery, Shakey’s.
The Azkals will also pin their hopes on leading international scorer Phil Younghusband and his strike partner Angel Guirado, midfielders Jason de Jong, Manny Ott, James Younghusband, defenders Rob Gier, Anton del Rosario and Rey Jonsson and goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.
The Azkals can also count on homegrown talents Chieffy Caligdong, Ian Araneta and Roel Gener.(PSA PR)

Recollection of past events, especially those that happened within the campus 25 years ago, will definitely make up part of the one-day tournament, which also aims to foster fellowship and camaraderie among golfing alumni, members, friends, sponsors and supporters of the UP College of Law.
Reyes said he expects at least 144 participants to take part in the 18-hole event that stakes a brand-new Toyota Altis as a hole-in-one prize. The car is courtesy of Toyota Abad Santos.
With PAGCOR as co-presentor, the Malcolm Cup also serves as the fund-raising activity of the Class of 1986, stressed Panagsagan.(PSA PR)

UB Brahmans joins 13th NCAA-South

A new member school in University of Batangas welcomes the 13th season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association-South (NCAA-South) that comes off the wraps on August 19 at the San Beda College Alabang in Muntinlupa.
The entry of the UB Brahmans brings to 19 the total schools competing for the 2011 season hosted by San Beda College Alabang and which has for its theme `Nation Building Through Sports.’
Aside from the host and University of Batangas, also seeing action are Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba, De La Salle Lipa, Lyceum of the Philippines-University-Batangas, First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities (FAITH)-Tanuan, Philippine Christian University-Dasmarina, San Pablo Colleges, San Pablo, University of Perpetual Help System-Laguna, and Don Bosco Technical College-Mandaluyong.
Long-time San Beda rector Fr. Paul M. De Vera, a member of the NCAA-South Policy Board, said at least two to three more schools are trying to apply as members, but stressed the league would be easy to manage at the moment with just 10 associates.
“Ten member schools are ideal,” said Fr. De Vera in the PSA Forum at Shakey’s U.N. Ave., where he was joined by Dom Clement Roque, rector president of San Beda College Alabang and chairman of the league’s Policy Board.
As always, basketball serves as the league’s centerpiece event, with no less than former national coach Joe Lipa as commissioner.
But Fr. De Vera added in the same session presented by Smart, PAGCOR, Outlast Battery and Shakey’s, that also included in this season’s calendar of events include volleyball, chess, football, badminton, table tennis, taekwondo, and swimming.
The NCAA-South, according to Roque, was established in 1999 by sister schools of the NCAA, precisely by colleges and universities mostly coming from the National Capital Region (NCR) and CALABARZON.
Muntinlupa City Mayor Aldrin San Pedro will be the special guest of honor during the formal opening ceremonies.(PSA PR)

Busy year for shooting association

THE second half of the year will be a very busy one for the Philippine National Shooting Association.
Mikee Romero, the newly-installed PNSA president, on Tuesday said the group has lined up a total of 11 local and international tournaments from August up to December.
“It’s the first time we’re hosting and competing in tournaments one after the other,” said Romero during yesterday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s along United Nations Avenue.
Romero graced the forum sponsored by Smart, Pagcor, Shakey’s, and Outlast Battery with PNSA executive director Larry Paredes, shooter Gay Corral and his executive assistant Eric Arejola.
Together they bared the calendar of activities starting off with the Rifle and Sniper Championship in Taytay, Rizal in August.
For September, on tap are the first Philippine Collegiate Shooting Championship under shooting champion Tac Padilla, the Combat Action Shotgun Championship and the SEASA Rifle and Pistol International Championship in Laos.
The Philippine National Open is set in October along with the Asian Shooting Conference and the Asian Airgun Championships in Kuwait. In November, it’s time for the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia and the Asian Shotgun Championships in Malaysia.
And lastly, in December, the PNSA will host the Philippine International Shotgun Open and the Philippine National Shotgun Open.
“We call this a shooting frenzy,” said Romero, who took over the presidency from Art Macapagal.
“But the Philippine International Shotgun Open from Dec. 6 to 14 will be the biggest so far under my watch. It will be the biggest event for the PNSA,” said Romero.
Paredes said for this event, they plan to bring in as many as 60 shooters from at least 15 countries, including those from the United States, Australia, Italy, India, Kuwait and Qatar.
“As I’ve said, we’re here to revive shooting, educate the people more about the sport, and tap as many shooters for the national pool to become future Olympians,” said Romero.(PSA PR)

Pahati to compete in IFSC c'ships

MIEL Pahati, the country’s top male wall climber, will be competing in the IFSC world climbing championships in Arco, Italy as part of his preparations in the 26th Indonesia Southeast Asian Games in November.
“I will be competing in three events at the worlds and I hope to at least reach the finals of one of them,’ said the 29-year-old Pahati in yesterday’s PSA forum at the UN Avenue branch in Manila.
Pahati and fellow national bet and female climber Ina Flores captured the gold medals in the recent POC-PSC National Games and will spearhead the country’s drive when the sport makes its debut in the SEA Games in the South Sumatran capital of Palembang.
Joining Pahati in the session sponsored by Pagcor, Outlast Battery, Smart and Shakey’s was Mountain Hard Wear brand manager Manny Batungbacal, whose company will supply the gear for the national wall climbers in the SEA  Games.
Pahati, who has been competing in the sport since he was 20, said he will vie in the speed climbing, 60-meter climb and bouldering the Arco competitions, which basically will be the same events in Indonesia.
He has a personal best of 15 seconds in the 50-meter speed contest, which he said  ranks him among the top in Southeast Asia, an event where he captured the gold in the Southeast Asian wallclimbing circuit in 2009.
On the other hand, Batungbacal, a former mountain climber himself, said  chances of the national bets garnering honors in the Indonesia Games are bright “considering the preparations they have been undergoing over the past six months.”
Both Batungbacal and Pahati said that aside from the Indon hosts, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia loom as the Filipinos’ challengers for the gold.
“We know it won’t be easy in Indonesia but with the training these wall climbers have undergone we stand a good chance of bringing home the gold when the sport makes its maiden appearance in Indonesia,” Batungbacal said.(PSA PR)

Res/Toe/Run hits road on July 24

RUNNING as a family affair takes on a new and exciting twist when the first Res/Toe/Run “Run for All” hits the road on July 24 at the picturesque but challenging Nuvali eco community in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
“Running in the country has become a family experience so we have come up with an innovative fun run that will require the teamwork and cooperation of all participants,” said Res/Toe/Run brand manager Joy Austria in yesterday’s PSA forum at the Shakey’s UN Avenue branch in Manila.
“The team members will be composed of one child not older than 15 years old and one male and female adult runner each, who all may either be members of one family or friends,” Austria added in the same session presented by Smart, PAGCOR, Shakey’s and Outlast Battery.
She added that the adult runners must be 18 years old and above.
Unlike other fun runs, race director Neville Manaois, who joined Austria at the forum,  said that the “Run for All” will be a relay starting with the child runner, who will negotiate a two-kilometer obstacle course in the open field.
The children will be handed a bracelet along the route as a sign that they have completed the race, which they will hand over to the female second-leg runners who must race through a three-kilometer circuit around Nuvali Lake.
They will also be awarded bracelets as they run around the course before heading back to base camp,  then turn these over to the male runners who will run the last leg, a five-kilometer trail within the sprawling residential-commercial estate.
The male entries will also be given a third bracelet before returning to base camp, after which all three team members will run together to the finish line, with the top three teams  being declared the winners.
“Most of the runners who will take part in the ‘Run for All’ are mostly the customers of Res/Toe/Run and their families”.
She said that the activity is included in Res/Toe/Run’s campaign and commitment to promote running as part of a healthy and active lifestyle for every Filipino family.
The champion team will receive P50,000 in gift certificates and a trip for three to the resort island of Boracay. The runner-up team will receive P30,000 in Res/Toe/Run GCs while third place P20,00 in GCs.
All Res/Toe/Run outlets carry durable and quality running shoes such as Columbia Sportswear, Salomon and The North Face, which are all sponsors of the competition, Austria said. Other sponsors are Nuvali, Pocari Sweat, Seair, Nutri Bar, Total Fitness, Front Runner, Dispatch, Takbo.ph and Mellow 94.7.
Res/Toe/Run is a member of the Primer Group of Companies, a top retail and distribution conglomerate with presence all over the country and Asia.
Register now until July 15 at all Res/Toe/Run stores in Metro Manila, The North Face SM Megamall and SM North Edsa, Columbia Sportswear Greenbelt 5 and SM Mall of Asia, and R.O.X. Bonifacio High Street, Taguig.(PSA PR)

Former senator renews calls for Joseph to step down

FORMER Senator Nikki Coseteng recently renewed his calls for Mark Joseph to step down as president of the Philippine Aquatic Sports Association (PASA).
Coseteng has taken the cudgels for the group that for the last couple of years has questioned the way Joseph has been running the affairs of PASA.
They have hurled various accusations against Joseph, and had even gone to the Office of the Ombudsman regarding the alleged misuse of funds.
Joseph has maintained silence against the allegations, and had said that he will only answer them, point by point, in the proper forum.
“It’s not actually our job to remove Mark Joseph. But if he has the dignity then he should step down,” Coseteng told the recent PSA Forum at Shakey’s UN Avenue.
“I’m not interested in his position. I’m only doing this for the sake of our young swimmers,” added Coseteng, president of the Diliman Preparatory School.
"We are already last, if not second to the last, in the SEA Games age-group championships. And if this will continue, then what can you expect in the next four, six or eight years?"
She has hooked up with the group of former national swimmer Susan Papa, who also appeared in the same session presented by Smart, Outlast Battery, PAGCOR, and Shakey’s, a group of parents and even some coaches in the battle against the PASA head.
Coseteng accused Joseph of money laundering together with former Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corporation chief Efraim Genuino.
Coseteng alleged that Genuino shelled out more than P34 million to PASA from December of 2007 up to January of 2009.
The money, she added, eventually went to the Genuino-owned Trace College and Aquatic Center in Los Banos, Laguna.
Coseteng also called on the Philippine Olympic Committee under Jose Cojuangco to act on the matter.
“Will they just close their eyes on this? Well, I can’t. It’s very easy to address this issue but why isn’t anyone taking action?” said Papa.
“Resignation is voluntary. We cannot forge a signature for somebody to resign,” added Coseteng.(PSA PR)

Ateneo battle-ready in UAAP Season 74

IT’S’ not going to be easy, but host Ateneo is battle-ready and prepared to defend its UAAP men’s cage title when basketball competition of Season 74 formally comes off the wraps on July 10 at the Araneta Coliseum.
The three-time reigning champion may have lost key players Ryan Buenafe and Eric Salamat, although it will parade new faces in national team player Greg Slaughter and former high school phenom Kiefer Ravena in its quest for a fourth straight varsity championship under coach Norman Black.
The Blue Eagles, newly crowned FilOil 2011 champions, however, expect a rough road back to the top as the rest of the field beefed up their respective rosters in the hope of toppling what has become an Ateneo basketball dynasty in the country’s premiere college league.
From Season 74 president Ricky Palou, Ateneo Board representative Emmanuel Fernandez, to Blue Eagles team manager Paolo Trillo, the consensus is that Far Eastern University Tamaraws and Adamson Falcons are the two elite teams expected to crowd out the Katipunan-based school for the coveted crown.
“It’s a tough league and any team can beat any team,” said Trillo, who comprised the Ateneo panel which appeared in Tuesday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s U.N. Ave. “But if you’re asking which are the teams that pose as major threats, I would say its FEU and Adamson because of their intact lineup.”
Reigning league MVP RR Garcia and Smart Gilas-Pilipinas standout Aldrech Ramos are again at the forefront of the Tamaraws’s bid to reclaim the title they last won in 2006, while Alex Nuyles, Jan Colina and Eric Camson will be back for another tour of duty for the Falcons.
Palou, who is also Ateneo athletic director, is likewise not discounting the threats of bitter rival La Salle and the rejuvenated National University squad, whose athletic director, June Baculi, was present too, in the same session presented by Smart, PAGCOR, Shakey’s and Outlast Battery.
The Bulldogs, coming off a championship stint in the recent Fr. Martin’s Cup, will again be bannered by last year’s Mythical 5 member Emmanuel Mbe, although additional firepower is going to be provided by former national youth team stalwarts Kyle Drexler Neypes, Cedrick Labing-isa and the much-heralded Bobby Ray Parks.
Baculi considers NU and La Salle as possible dark horses, but really likes the Bulldogs’ chances if and when Parks will be given the go-signal to play by the UAAP Board.
The son of legendary former PBA import Bobby Parks is still doubtful to play for the Bulldogs owing to illegibility issue, which the Board won’t addressed until July 5.
“We will present the documents to the Board,” said Baculi, pertaining to papers certifying that the 16-year-old Parks attended secondary schooling at NU.
“So it is up to the Board to decide if he (Parks) can play this season or not.”
According to Palou Ateneo is leaving nothing to chance to make the school’s hosting this season special.
Unlike before when basketball competition formally ushers the new season, this year will have Season 74 being unveiled behind an Olympic-style opening at the Marikina Sports Complex on July 9.
Palou said athletes representing all sports calendared in the UAAP will be in attendance during the fiesta-like gathering which has for its theme `All Out, All Heart.’
The following day, action in basketball begins, with FEU taking on La Salle in the 1 p.m. opener and Ateneo opening its title retention bid against Adamson at 3 p.m.[PSA PR]

Joining them in the weekly session aired live over Sports Radio 918 and presented by Smart, PAGCOR, Outlast Battery, and Shakey’s is National University athletic director Junel Baculi, whose rejuvenated Bulldogs are considered among the top contenders for this year’s men’s basketball championship.[Philippine Sportswriters Association PR]

PFF Suzuki Cup U23 bootfest blasts off

THE Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Suzuki Cup U23 National Cup Mindanao regional finals kicked off Thursday afternoon at the Tionko football grounds with four teams fighting for slots to the quarterfinals.

Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Suzuki Cup general coordinator Red Avelino, gracing the regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum Thursday at the Tower Inn, said the top two teams in this Mindanao qualifying will advance to the quarterfinals slated at the Panaad Park and Sports Stadium in Bacolod City.

"The top two teams from Mindanao, Luzon, Visayas and the National Capital Region will compete in the quarters where they will be grouped into two. The top of each group will then enter the semifinals," Avelino said.

Only those aged 23 and under from the current national team Azkals who can play in the SEA Games, which is the reason the selection process is now being staged.

Suzuki Philippines managing director Catalina Calderon said their company felt the need for the country to develop more local talents in football on the heels of the Azkals' growing popularity.

"Our mother company in Japan has been throwing huge sponsorships with the AFC that's why we are just following their lead. We are partnering with PFF in this helping youth football here," Catalan said.

Public relations officer Eillen Esteban, meanwhile, said Zuzuki will continue to be in the forefront of supporting football in the Philippines.

Matches started Thursday afternoon with Davao City going against Dipolog and North Cotabato playing Cagayan de Oro.
