Batman's last photo with fellow sports co-workers


This is Ferdie "Batman" Lintuan (extreme right) is his usual self, making his sports co-workers laugh. This photo was taken on the night of December 23 in a gathering of DSA and Scoop Davao members.

The former DSA President was gunned down the next day, December 24. The authorities have formed "Task Force Batman" to investigate why he was killed.

Batman was buried on Sunday morning, December 30, at the Buhangin Memorial Park beside his wife Nora, who died two years ago.

They left four school-aged boys.

DSA strongly condemns ambush-slaying of former President

The Davao Sportswriters Association strongly condemned the ambush-slaying of Ferdie "Batman" Lintuan, who was its former President and a friend.

We urged police authorities to investigate and put the perpetrators of this barbaric act behind bars and give justice to Batman and his family.

THE University of Mindanao Broadcasting Network (UMBN)signed up to compete in the Pamaskong Handogy ni MayorRody Duterte Cycling Challenge that gets underway onSunday in Catalunan Grande.
This was bared by Samahang Siklista Kooperatiba ngDabaw (SSikad) chairmam Salvador Paholio, Jr. duringthe Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at theTower Inn on Thursday.
He said in the vernacular, "Former Southeast Asian(SEA) Games medalist Dominic Carpio will lead the UMBNteam that will also parade the services of MarvinAleonar, Glen Iba¤ez and Melchor Labayo, Jr."
He said another team, which might carry the name ofVice-Mayor Inday Sara Duterte, will have veteranriders Hilario Ladra, Marcial Catangue, Glen Yap andCarlofer Salonga.
The Terrain Challenger 911 had also registered in therace that features the road bike and mountain bikeevents.
"The road bike open elite event is classified intoteam and individual categories. The team competitionoffers cash prizes of P4,000, P2,000 and P1,500 to thetop three finishers while the top three individualwinners will win P2,500, P2,000 and P1,000," theSSikad chief added.
The MTB race, which will have the beginners 18-23 andmasters 35-above divisions, also stakes cash prizes tothe first three riders.

Former Metro Davao Table Tennis Association (Medatta)president Friendee Nu¤ez said participants will showtheir wares in the boys and girls singles 14-under,me's and women's singles and men's class B singlescategories.
"The men's class b singles event is exclusive forDavao City residents only while the rest of the eventsare open for visiting players," he told members of theDavao Sportswriters Association (DSA) in their weeklyforum at the Tower Inn, Thursday.
He said the free registration tournament will awardcash prizes of P1,000, P700 and P500 to the top threewinners of the boys and girls 14-under divisions.
The men's class B and women' singles winners willreceive P1,500, P1,000 and P700 while the men'ssingles first three table paddlers will go home withP2,000, P1,500 and P1,000.

Bangoyan to defend crown in February

MAYOR Alex Wangkay's boxer Balweg "Davao Hitman"Bangoyan will defend his PBF junior featherweight beltin February next year in Cebu City.
The 20-year-old Bangoyan, who scored a fifth roundknockout against Jun Padre on Dec. 16 in Surigao, saidhis manager Mayor Wangkay is still scouting for anopponent.
"As far as I know, my title fight will be an undercardof Gerry Pe¤alosa's bout in Cebu," the unassuming JoseAbad Santos native said in the vernacular during theDavao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at theTower Inn, Thursday.
He said he will resume training at the gym of VicenteJoven Adriano in Matina as soon as he recuperates fromthe headbutt and right hand injuries he absorbed fromhis last fight.
"A finger in my right hand got broken and it's stillswollen. I had to fight with just one hand after thesecond round of my bout in Surigao. I'm glad to havestill won the fight," he said while showing hisinjured hand.
Bangoyan added, "I need to improve more in my stamina,speed and power to ensure my defense this February."

DSA tackles table tennis, darts, boxing, cycling

Four events in the 2007 RRD Pamaskong Handog Sportsfest are the topics of the DSA Forum on Thursday, December 20, 10:30 a.m., at the Tower Inn.

Friendee Nunez will talk about the table tennis competition at the Davao City Recreation Center on December 29, Atty.Marvin Melodias will give details of the darts tournament at the Mantex Ihaw Ihaw on December 26.

Joining them are ABAP-Davao President and Davao City Councilor Edgar Ibuyan for the boxing tournament on December 23 at the City Hall Drive and Salvador Paholio Jr. for the cycling race on December 22 at Catalunan Grande.

Green light on for Pamaskong Handog ni RRD Softball tourney on Sunday

It's all systems go for the softball tournament of the 2007 Pamaskong Handog ni Mayor Rodrigo Duterte Sportsfest on Sunday, December 16, at the University of Mindanao-Matina Campus.

The best veteran and young players will vie for honors in the four-day competition presented by Mayor Duterte with the support of City Sports Coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go and the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines-Davao Chapter.

Asaphil-Davao Director Joaquin "Boy" Sarabia said that teams from Digos, Panabo, Tagum, University of Southern Mindanao-Kabacan will battle it out with Davao squads Matina Boys, Davao City Water District, Wadab Kaulo Records and University of Mindanao.

On Thursday's Davao Sporswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, Sarabia said competition is going to be tight as all teams have prepared for the event.

Team meeting is set at 8 a.m. and the drawing of lots will immediately follow. First game is scheduled at 9 a.m. with the fourth and last game at 3 p.m.

He said games will be played also on December 23, 28 and the championship round on December 30.

Cebu, CDO bets to join Pamaskong Handog ni Mayor RRD Triathlon on Sunday

The best athletes from Cebu and Cagayan de Oro are coming to Davao to compete in the triathlon event of the 2007 Pamaskong Handog ni Mayor Rodrigo Duterte Sportsfest on Sunday, December 16, at the Waterfront Insular Hotel.

Race starts at 6 a.m. but the pre-race briefing is on Saturday, 2 p.m., at the front of the hotel.

National Age-Group Champion Neil Cateel, 23, of Cagayan de Oro is among the heavy favorites to win the one-kilometer swim, 30-kilometer bike and seven-kilometer run competition.

Paulo Ouano, spokesman of the organizing Triathlon Association of Davao (Triad), told sportswriters on Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum that 80 male and female triathletes are joining the contest presented by Mayor Duterte and supported by City Sports Coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go.

200 players eye top honors in Pamaskong Handog ni Mayor RRD Youth Chessfest on Saturday

Two hundred young woodpushers are gunning for honors in the 2007 Pamaskong Handog ni Mayor Rodrigo Duterte Youth Chess Tournament on Saturdaym, December 15, at the Market Basket in DAMOSA.
National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) National Arbiter Ronnie Tabudlong said that the five-round Swiss System event will feature the best juniors and 14 years old and under players.
Deadline of submission of entry is on December 14, he said on Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.
Tabudlong, who is also the Mindanao coordinator of the prestigious Shell Active Youth Championship and newly-elected Barangay Kagawad of 33-D, said that they are grateful that Mayor Duterte has kept on supporting youth chess competitions to hone further their skills and become top-caliber players.
Metro Davao Chess Association Chito Dimakiling, father of International Master Oliver, is chief arbiter.
Tabudlong also expressed the Anflocor Management for providing the venue for free.

All systems go for 6th RRD Elderlympics

It is all systems go for the 6th RRD Elderlympics on December 8 to 9 at the RMC and on December 10 at the SM City Davao.
Francisco “Kit” Rivera, newly-elected President of the Association of Senior Citizens in Davao City, told sportswriters on Thursday’s Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, that close to 5,000 senior citizens are joining the three-day event.
Vice Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio is the guest speaker after the parade which starts at 7:30 a.m.
A total of 14 teams are competing in the various events like field demonstration, table games, recreational events, athletics, darts, basketball, table tennis, badminton, quiz bowl, social ballroom dancing competition.
City Poblacion A is defending its title this year against Agdao, Baguio, Bunawan, Buhangin A and B, City Poblacion B, Calinan, Marilog, Paquibato, Talomo A and B, Toril and Tugbok Districts.
The Elderlympics is presented by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte in cooperation with the Philippine Association of Social Workers, Inc. (PASWI) Davao and with the support of the Offices of Councilors Leo Avila, Tomas Monteverde IV and Nilo Abellera, Rizal Memorial Colleges, Philippine Sports Commission, SM City Davao, Philippine Veterans Bank.
Minor sponsors are Digital Pixmaker, Julu Enterprises, Davao Light and Power Company, Davao City Water District, RDL Laboratories, Apo Mineral Water, Apo View Hotel and Holcim Philippines.

The Holcim-RRD Inter-High School Football Tournament gets going on Sunday at the Tionko field near Agro College.
Gunning for honors are from Ateneo de Davao, Holy Child High, Montserat Camp School, Indonesian School, Emar Learning Center, University of Mindanao, Daniel A. Aguinaldo High, Davao City National High, South Point School, Agro Foundation College and S.O.S. Village.
Opening ceremony is at 9 a.m. at the Davao Football Association (DFA) Club House.
The tournaments will be played every weekend, according to DFA General Secretary Erwin Protacio on Thursday’s Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.
A football festival for young boys and girls is also scheduled a day earlier for the various age groups.
The tournament, supported by Vice Mayor Sara Duterte and Councilor Angela Librado, is for the 14 years old and under, 12 under and 10 under.
The tournament opens at 8 a.m.

DSA tackles Holcim football, Dover Memorial tourney

The Holcim Youth Football Tournament and the 1st Dover Memorial Bowling Tournament are the main topics of the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum on Thursday, December 6, 10:30 a.m. at the Tower Inn.

Davao Football Association General Secretary Erwin Protacio, Coach David Peñano, Holcim Phils. Vice-President Ednel Pascual will give details of the event scheduled on December 9 at the Tionko field near Agro College.

Larry Laolao, Bong Vergara's representative, will talk about the 1st Dover Memorial Cup, organized to honor the contribution of the late Domingo Vergara's to duckpin bowling in Davao City.

Ibuyan to continue helping amateur boxers

City Councilor Edgar Ibuyan will never abandon amateur boxing development as head of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines-Davao City Chapter.

Under his wing are the 15 amateur fighters who they also send to school.

"ABAP Davao City is stable," said Ibuyan's spokesman and Barangay 5-A Kagawad Ruben Dongzal on Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.

The statement on reports that there are already two amateur boxing organizations in Davao, the other headed by Councilor Amilbangsa Manding, President of the Liga ng mga Barangay Boxing Association.

Dongzal said that the other group's focus, though, is to build a stable of professional fighters and not amateurs which is consonance with ABAP and the international governing body, AIBA.

"We will continue to follow what is best for amateur boxing in Davao," said Dongzal, who bared that Councilor Ibuyan made sure that the Davao Chapter is registered to have legal personality.

5,000 runners to join S.O.S. race

The S.O.S. Children's Village Fun Run has draw the participation of 5,000 runners on December 1 at 5 a.m., according to Race Organizer Noel Tanucan on Thursday's DSA Forum at the Tower Inn.

The race, organized in partnership with the Davao Association of Colleges and Schools (DACS) starts at the Victoria Plaza and ends at the S.O.S. Children's Village in Bajada.

Registration fee is P50 but they can have a t-shirt if they pay P50 more. The funds will go to the 185 kids under the care of S.O.S.

Brgy.Sasa cagefest on Dec.1

The Araw ng Barangay Sasa Inter-High School Tournament reels off on December 1 at the Doña Salud gym.

Brgy.Capt.Mario Reta will formally open the tournament at 8:30 a.m.

St.Therese College of Science and Technology plays F. Bangoy National High Schoo in the first game at 9 a.m., followed by Southern Phils. Polytechnic College against Fatima de Davao-Sasa at 10:30 a.m., F.Bangoy against Southern Philippines at 3:30 p.m. and St.Therese against Fatima at 5 p.m.

On Thursday's DSA Forum at the Tower Inn, League Director Rael Diaz said that games will resume on December 2 and the championship is on Decmeber 6 at 7:30 p.m.

RRD Elderlympics ready next month at RMC gym, SM City Davao

Close to 5,000 senior citizens are joining the 6th RRD Elderlympics on December 8 to 9 at the Rizal Memorial Colleges gym and on December 10 at the SM City Davao.
On Thursday's DSA Forum at the Tower Inn, Councilor Leo Avila, Chairman of the RRD Elderlympics 2007, the event, chiefly backed by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, is to provide a venue for physical and mental exercise as well as to recognize the significant contribution of the senior citizens to the community.
With the them of "Active Ageing", the RRD Elderlympics will have various activities lined-up like the field demonstration, 25 meters by 4 relay, 100-meter walkathon, basketball free throw and four on four, chess, table tennis, paper cutting, message relay, candle relay, golf ball putting, fish fanning, quiz bowl and social ballroom dancing competition.
City Poblacion A is defending its title in this year's event supported by the Office of the City Mayor, Office for the Senior Citizens Affairs, Davao City Federatoin of Senior Citizens Association, SP Committee on Social Services headed by Councilor Tomas Monteverde IV, City Social Services and Development Office, City Administrator's Office, City DILG, PASWI-Davao, DSAP, Rotary Club of Davao 2000, Philippine Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine, Dr.Maria Luisa Aportadera, Dr.Melanie Herrera, City Health Office, Dancesport Davao, City Sports Division, Fil-Canadian Development and Training Center for Caregivers and the Office of Councilor Leonardo R. Avila III.
He said that SM City Davao, RMC though President Leo Tereso A. Magno, Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Veterans Bank have also supported the event including the Drugstores Association of the Philippines which will hold a medical mission.

1st PAFP golfest to raise funds for the poor

The 1st Philippine Academy of Family Physicians-Davao Chapter hopes to raise funds for the poor when it holds the 1st PAFP Open Golf Tournament on December 9 at the Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club.
PAFP-Davao Chapter President Dr.Ana Liza Lanuza-Moscoso said that they intend to equip their Wellness Center at S.I.R. Matina which is serving the poor, especially children ages one to 12 years old, in coordination with the Davao City Health Office. Free consultation is given to the patients but they could not complete the laboratory tests because of the cost.
"We hope to raise the funds to buy laboratory equipment like a miscroscope and for CBC, urinalysis, stool exam," she said on Thursday's DSA Forum at the Tower Inn.
She said projects for health, education, surgeries and nutrition program are among the things they are currently working to help the marginalized sector.
"All the money that will be raised will be appropriated for the community," she said referring to the registration fee of P2,500.
Emcor has donated one motorcycle as one of the prizes for the tournament and an anonymous donor also came in to help them, she siad.
Help also came in from Pharma 3, Enterprise Bank, Pascual Laboratory, DPWH Malita, Ulticon Builders, Natrapharm, Atty.Bonifacio Military, LRI, Otsuka, Kiwanis Club of Cosmopolitan Detroit, Global Times, Stroke Society of the Philippines which is co-presenting the event.

400 golfers to join 18th Durian Tee

More than 400 golfers are again expected to join the 18th edition of the Durian Tee on November 29 to 30 and December 1 to 2 at the Apo Golf and Country Club.
Club's General Manager Martin Misa said they are ready to host the number of golfers who will not come only from Davao City but also from Manila, Dumaguete, Tacloban, Zamboanga City, Cebu City, Cagayan de Oro City and Gen.Santos City.
Kar Asia Inc. has lined-up a Mitsubishi Fusion GLX as hole-in-one prize while the other hole-in-one prizes are P500,000 courtesy of JTL Insurance Agency and Yamaha Golf Cart.
On Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, he said that entry fee is P2,000 only for members but non-members will have to pay P1,000 more. A Nautica jacket is the tournament's giveaway.

SBC `Tatlohan' bowling on Nov.21, 28, Dec.1

The Sunday Bowlers Club organizes a "Tatlohan" Bowling Classic on November 21 and 28, and December 1 at the Fairlanes.
Outgoing SBC President Emeterio "Emie" Orteza said more than 400 members are competing in the tournament.
The champion wins P3,000, P2,000 for the second placers and P1,000 for the third placers.
The tournament follows also a classification for the players to determine the handicap scores.
"This will balance the teams," said Orteza on Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.
Registration is only P500 that includes alley fees.

Ceelin Mindanao Inter-School swimfest attracts participants outside of Davao City

The Ceelin Mindanao Inter-School Swimming Competition has attracted swimmers from Gen.Santos City, Cagayan de Oro City and Koronadal City as of Thursday.

Organizer Darren Evangelista of the Evangelista Aquatics Inc. said that they are ready on November 24 to 25 at the Woodridge Park Country Clubhouse.

Gen.Santos City, he said, is expected to field in 14 teams, four from Cagayan de Oro, nine from Koronadal while host Davao City will have around eight schools.

Cesar Esmale, Davao's coach in the past Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia, is head of the technical committee.Medals and ribbons are to be awarded to the winners.

A Ceelin swimming bag will be given to the participant.

On Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, Evangelista said deserving participants from public schools who cannot afford pay the registration fee will be given slots.

Bowling and swimming are the main topics of the DSA Forum on Thursday, November 15, 10:30 a.m., at the Tower Inn.

Emeterio Orteza, President of the Sunday Bowlers Club will give details of the upcoming Tatlohan Bowling Tournament at the Fairlanes while Darren Evangelista of the Evangelista Aquatics Inc. will discuss the Ceelin Mindanao Inter-School Swimming Competition scheduled on November 24 to 25 at teh Woodridge Park Village.

DSA President and Sports Editor Charles Raymond Maxey is requesting the Davao media to join the weekly public service sports program sponsored by Tower Inn and Genesis 88 Advertising.

Starting this week, we will be posting updates from the weekly DSA Forum.
The DSA Forum started in 1995 at its first venue, the Philippine Information Agency-XI, then headed by the late Regional Director Josie San Pedro.
The sports talk is now hosted by Tower Inn of businessman Guillermo "WT" Torres, Jr.
The Forum starts at 10:30 a.m. every Thursday featuring sports personalities and events.
