6th Baseball Cup set Feb. 11-12, AIESEC-AdDU eyes 1,000 runners in fun run event, Loyzaga arriving in Davao
BAGUIO Central Elementary School (BCES) is expected to pose a threat to defending champion Lt. Col. Villafuerte Sr. Elementary School (LCVSES) when the 6th Davao City Baseball Cup tips off at the University of Mindanao (UM) Matina diamond on February 11 to 12.
Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School (PNJKIS) school administrator Ines Mallari, secretariat in-charge of the annual event, said Baguio CES just dethroned Villafuerte batters in the Davao City Athletic Association (DCAA) Meet last year.
Because of this, Baguio CES earned the right to represent the city to the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet set on April 10 to 14 in Tagum City and New Bataan, Compostela Valley.
"Baguio Central is a new entry in the Baseball Cup this year and they are coming fresh from a championship. For sure, the Villafuerte team will try to hold on to its Baseball Cup elementary division title if only to avenge their DCAA loss to Baguio Central. Villafuerte is already a five-time champion in this league," Mallari said during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn on Thursday.
She said Biao Elementary School is also a new team in the elementary level, while Wangan High School is the lone beginner in the secondary side in the two-day meet that attracted a total of 13 elementary and six High School teams.
DCBA president Joaquin "Boy" Sarabia said it is expected for teams that lost in a particular tournament to bounce back in another tournament.
Baseball Cup High School division reigning champion Calinan National High School will face a similar plight as DCAA Meet tormentor Crossing Bayabas National High School is out to challenge them. CBNHS, a third placer in the Cup last year, also bagged the DCAA title.
The Tokyo Kichijoji Lions Club-backed tournament offers cash prizes, trophies, plaques, medals and baseball equipment to the first three placers in each category.
Division most valuable players (MVPs) will each pocket P1,000 and a medal.
Participating teams will be given transportation subsidy, lunch for two days and a fellowship dinner in the event also sponsored by Nitten Company, Kazuma Sports, Yakult Philippines, Probiotics Inc. and PNJKIS and supported by Coach Hidetoshi Suzuki, Masaaki Uchida, Hiroyuki Komaki, Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku, Mayor Sara Duterte, Department of Education and Dr. Helen Paguican.
