Mercedes Group of Island serves as perfect backdrop

THE Mercedes Group of Island in Camarines Norte serves as the perfect backdrop for the 2nd leg of the Philippine Kayaking Series 2011 set on August 5-7.
Highlight of the three-day event is the 15 km race from Apuao Grande Island to the other islands of Mercedes to be held on August 7, with the Mercedes mainland serving as its finish line.
Mercedes Camarines Norte Mayor Alex Pajarillo said in the weekly PSA Forum at Shakey’s U.N. Ave. that the competition offers many first as far as the kayaking series is concerned.
“Marami pong first dito,” he said in the session presented by Smart, PAGCOR, Shakey’s and Outlast Battery, noting that this will be the first time the competition will be held on Pacific Ocean waters, and the first time it will be held in Mercedes Group of Island, which is being groomed as a new tourist destination in the country.
Val Camara of the Philippine Kayaking Association added that Kayak Explore Mercedes Kadagatan Festival also includes activities for beginners and those interested to get into the sport.
He said kayaking clinics start on August 5 with kayak slalom, while a 5km novice race will be held on August 6.
A cultural treat for participants is the Kadagatan fiesta prepared by the Mercedes local government and its residents, topped by street dancing as part of their Foundation Day celebration.
According to Mayor Pajarillo, including kayaking to the marine festival is relevant and hopes to jumpstart livelihood, conservation and cultural activities after the event.
Registration fee is P1,800 per person, inclusive of six meals, kayak use, entry fee to all activities, campsite use in Apuao Grande, tent and boat transfers.(PSA PR)
