THE President's Cup Open Bowling Tournament 2011 next month is the first major tournament to be staged by the Sunday Bowlers Club's 2011 officers and board of directors who will be sworn into office on Saturday evening at the Maxcey's Veranda.

Emie Orteza, who was elected into his fifth term as president of the group, said the President's Cup will be a seven-game team competition that will roll off on February 10 at Fairlanes Bowling Center.


"This is part of our preparations for the upcoming 34th Fedbop National Annual Bowling Tournament to be hosted by the Davao Province Bowling Association (Daproba). We really want to help Davao City defend the national women's title and regain the men's crown we last held in 2005 in Koronadal by holding regular tournaments like this," Orteza said during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.
The top four teams after the seven-game series will advance to the step-the-ladder finals where the champion will receive P7,000 while the next three placers will claim P5,000, P4,000 and P3,000, respectively. They will also receive trophies.

Cash prizes will also be awarded to the highest individual average titlist, highest individual and doubles scorers and masters game winners.

Mayor Inday Sara Duterte, meanwhile, has been invited as guest speaker of SBC's inducting rites.

Vice president Panfilo Efondo, secretary Melesedick Bojo, treasurer Artemio Ando and auditor Jose Torres will also be sworn into office along with Plutarco Banlasan, lawyer Vic Dumlao, Baby Gil Plata, Amado Crudo, Ireneo Dalayon, Amado Lauro, Reynaldo Soriano and Reynaldo Paloso as board of directors. Asics Davao Run fires off Feb. 20


SOME 1,000 participants are expected to compete for honors in the newest Asics Davao Run which kicks off at 5 a.m. on February 20 in an out-and-back course at Plaza del Carmen, Loyola St. along Bo. Obrero in Davao City.

RunClub marketing assistant Ester Mae Rollorata on Thursday said the event features new distances like the 4K, 7K and 15K as their general manager Ramong "Monchit" Mackay wanted enthusiasts to run longer with these new categories.


"It will be a new challenge as well for regular runners to exert more effort to finish these races where some P30,000 worth of Asics gift certificates await top performers and over P50,000 worth of items will be raffled off during the awarding rites," Rollorata told members of the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) during their weekly sports forum at the Tower Inn.


The first five men's and women's 15K finishers will receive P5,000, P4,000, P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000 worth of gift certificates while gift checks worth P4,000, P3,000 and P2,000 will be awarded to the first three men's and women's 7K placers. The top three men's and women's 4K runners, meanwhile, will take home P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000 worth of gift checks.

Registration fee is P350 inclusive of Asics singlet, race packet, light breakfast and finisher's certificate.

All registered runners will also avail of a one-time 15 percent discount on all regular Asics products until March 15 at Run Club. The first 200 registrants will also get RunClub Elite Card each allowing them to purchase any other brand item with 10 percent discount.

Rapid chess at Citimall

SOUTH Cotabato woodpushers will show their wares in the Rapid Chess Tournament 2011 Tribute to Alex Aguilar that will unfold on February 5 and 6 at the Gaisano Grand CitiMall entertainment center.

Tournament director National Master (NM) Prospero "Bebot" Cruz bared this during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.


"The South Cotabato players will make this upcoming tournament a tune-up event for their regional meet. Davraa Meet-bound chessers will also see action in this 16 years old and below competition," Cruz said.


He said it will be a seven-round Swiss System format where each participant will have 25 minutes to play.

Registration fee is P75 in the rapid event where the champion will pocket a cash prize of P1,000 and a medal while next two placers will settle for P700 and P500 also with medals. Deadline is set at 12 noon on February 5.
