Davao's Bangoyan ready to rumble, Blue Knights cagefest set, Sports scribes see Manny Pacquiao win

Davao's Bangoyan ready to rumble

FORMER WBC international super bantamweight champion Balweg "Davao Hitman" Bangoyan is ready to trade punches with Eric "Anthony" Macas of Lanao del Norte in a non-title junior light welterweight fight dubbed "November Fever Encounter" this Saturday at the Davao City Recreation Center (DCRC).

But Bangoyan, current RP. No. 9 Jr. lightweight contender, has to cut down on weight to make the 131 pounds limit as the weigh-in is set at 11 a.m. Friday at the Games and Amusement Board (Gab) office.

The 22-year-old Bangoyan, a ward of former Jose Abad Santos (JAS) Mayor Alex Wangkay, also known as Zander Khan, was still at 133 pounds when he appeared at the regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn yesterday.

The fighter, however, assured that it would be easy to make weight in time for the weigh-in against Bong Yap-managed Macas, 27, the current RP No. 10 jr lightweight.

"I'm excited for this fight but I'm not making any prediction. I'm prepared for him and I pray I'll beat him. He is more experienced than me but I'm younger and I'm quicker. It will all boil down to our training. I'll just see him in the ring," the Davao fighter said.

Bangoyan is holding a record of 15 wins, including nine knockouts and two losses. Macas, on his part, toted a 13-8 card with six knockouts as reported via Filipino Boxing Journal website.

Wangkay said the fight serves as a tune-up for Bangoyan who is set to take a shot for another world title fight against an Australian next year.

He said they are preparing Bangoyan for his world title fight that will be co-promoted by Australia-based Peter Maniatis. The Davao pug may even fly to Australia in December to start his training there.

"It would be best for him to train in Australia since we can find more sparring partners there and better facilities. We have been coming short of sparring partners for him here," Wangkay said.

Bangoyan supporter Ron Doran said his friend Peter Maniatis is very interested to promote Bangoyan in Australia citing his impressive fighting record.

"Peter (Maniatis) and I want to help promote boxing in Mindanao and bring boxers from this region to Australia. We are glad that Zander Khan is doing a great job with Bangoyan," Doran said.

The Saturday event also features five other professional fights and five amateur fights.

General admission and ringside tickets are pegged at P100 and P300, respectively. (Marianne Saberon-Abalayan)

Blue Knights cagefest set

A TOTAL of 28 teams confirmed to join the Blue Knights Basketball League (BKBL) Season 2010 which is slated to open on November 20 at the Ateneo de Davao University Matina Sports Complex.

Organizer Michael Alquiza of the Blue Knight Sports Management Corp., gracing yesterday's regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, said this season is the biggest so far with the league attracting the most number of participating teams.

"We had 15 teams on our first year and grew to 24 teams last year. We are very happy to have increased the turnout this year. These 28 teams are competing in three division--seniors for 36 years old and above, juniors for 35 and below and open for highly competitive teams. Current varsity, commercial and PBL players are welcome to join in the open division," Alquiza said.

He said players should have at least studied for one year at any Jesuit school to be eligible to play in the seniors and juniors events.

Co-organizer Toto Mabaquaio said the league is a statistics-based tournament sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

"All statistics of players like rebounds, steals, assists and scores will be noted. This will help us determine the best choices for specific individual awards at the end of the season," Mabaquiao said.

Three games will be played each on the two courts every 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays in the meet sponsored by Powerade. (MLSA)

Sports scribes see Manny Pacquiao win

VETERAN sportswriters on Thursday predicted that world's pound for pound king Manny Pacquaio will come out victorious against Mexican Antonio Margarito when they clash for the world super welterweight championship at the Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Sunday (Manila time).

Edge Business Davao's Ram Maxey said it's Pacquaio with an early win, saying that the ring warrior from General Santos will again prove his dominance in the ring in a classic fashion.

"I feel sorry for all Mexican fighters who thought they are the best in the world until the great Pacquaio emerged," Maxey said.

Maxey's son, Charles Raymond, who is sports editor of Sun.Star Davao and current president of the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA), said the Filipino's speed and power will beat Margarito.

"Manny's powerful left and right combinations will do the trick and his incredible speed will pose a great problem on Margarito. It will be a Pacquaio victory in a later round," the younger Maxey said.

Charles, however, noted that the five-foot-eleven Margarito is the biggest opponent Pacquiao will face in his entire career.

Quoting former North Cotabato Vice Governor Manny PiƱol, Charles said the Pacquaio-Margarito encounter can be likened to the Biblical story of David and Goliath where the young boy overcame the giant.

Mindanao Times sports editor Jon Develos, also vice-president of DSA, was even bold to say that Pacquiao will win via knockout between the ninth to eleventh rounds or perhaps win by unanimous decision also in a later round. (MLSA)
