National riders wanted, Abante Grande race reset

PhilCycling officials are looking for young riders to become members of the national team.

PhilCycling vice-president for Mindanao Leo Magaway said that the tryout is scheduled next week and they will be inviting 18 years old and 21 years old and below riders.

“If they will qualify, they will become members of the RP Team,” said Magaway on Thursday’s Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.

He said that the Philippine Sports Commission will be providing for their allowances and accommodations while the PhilCycling will give focus on their training in preparation for international competitions.

Magaway, who is also the Road Commission chairman, said that talks are ongoing with college officials for the riders to become varsity players and for them to finish their education.

He added that they will also be looking for potential national players in Mindanao as competitions are being organized not only in Davao but also in key cities and provinces in the island.

Meanwhile, the Abante Grande Mountain Bike Challenge was reset from April 29 to April 27.

PhilCycling regional director Salvador Paholio Jr. said around 200 riders are expected to compete in the event backed by Councilor Paolo Z. Duterte.

SK Federation chairperson Mary Grace Udang said that P19,000 in cash prizes will be up for grabs to the winners.

Aside from the cycling race, Udang said that they have also basketball and football as other events in celebration of the Araw ng Barangay Catalunan Grande.

PSC Mindanao field office opens in Davao, MFG in Tubod

Philippine Sports Commission Executive Assistant Joseph Encabo said that their Mindanao field office will start its operations on Friday at No.35-A, Quimpo Boulevard, 200 meters away from SM City Davao.

The formal opening, he said, will be done when PSC Chairman William Ramirez comes home to Davao from Cuba.

On Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, Encabo said they have hired a competent staff to run the day to day operations of the field office.

Encabo said that the Mindanao Friendship Games will be back in Tubod, Lanao del Norte on November 29 to December 5.

Tubod first hosted the MFG in 2001.

The MFG is a brainchild of Ramirez, designed as a sports for peace program in Mindanao.
