AdDU battles DWA spikers

THE Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) aims to stretch its winning streak when it collides with Davao Wisdom Academy (DWA) in the resumption of the Shakey's Girls Volleyball League Season 8 Mindanao eliminations on Saturday at the Davao City National High School (DCNHS).

A win in their 3:45 p.m. clash will give Ateneo the solo leadership of bracket B. Ateneo and the A.G. Busano Sr. High School of General Santos City currently shared the lead with identical 2-0, win-loss slate.

DWA, for its part, is at the bottom of the team standings with a 0-2 mark.

Evangelista Aquatics and Sports Management Inc. (Easmi) project director Rael Diaz, who attended the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at Tower Inn Thursday, said the quarterfinal matches are set on March 19 at DCNHS.

The semifinals and championship matches will be held on March 26 at the Ladislawa Garden Village Gym.

"The Mindanao champion team will earn the right to represent the region to the national finals in Bacolod next month at the expense of Shakey's," Diaz said.

Other Saturday matches pit Cor Jesu College of Digos (1-1) against Maa National High School (1-0) in bracket C at 12 p.m., Holy Cross College of Sasa (1-1) against Stella Maris Academy of Davao (1-1) in bracket A at 1:15 p.m. and Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School (2-0) and MNHS at 2:30 p.m. in bracket C.

'Araw' bowlfest rolls off at B3

HOST Davao City will try to defend its title when the Araw ng Dabaw Tenpin Bowling Tournament formally opens at 6 p.m. Thursday at the NCCC Mall B3 Lanes.

But Manila, Imus and Cebu pintopplers may pull off surprises in this year's edition that offers a cash prize of P30,000 to the masters champion.

Paul Rabe, press relations officer (PRO) of the organizing Davao Tenpin Bowlers Association (Datba), said Art Galendez is the defending champion.

"The bulk of players are from Davao City so there's a good chance that the title will stay with us but visiting bowlers are always considered stiff rivals," Rabe said in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.

He also said local players were set to play the first eight games of the qualifying round Thursday night to accommodate some 80 participant, including out-of-towners, until Sunday.

Each bowler will have to play at total of 16 games in the event that will also give away P20,000 to the second placer, P10,000 to the third finisher and P5,000 to the fourth placer. The top four players will also receive trophies.

Only the top 25 players, however, will battle it out for quarterfinals en-route to the semifinals and finals rounds.

Interested players who are affiliated with the sanctioning Philippine Bowling Congress (PBC) can join the event. Registration fee is P3,000.
