Barnes sisters eye golds

NEWLY-crowned Malaysia champion Oona Ysabelle Barnes of Davao City will eye for the gold medal when the 2011 AAK SM Karatedo Championships kicks off on April 15 to 17 at SM City Davao.

Barnes, who captured the girls 8-9 kumite gold and kata bronze in the 4th SMA Karatedo Cup held in Kuala Lumpur recently, said she will do her best to score another victory.

"I will just do my best in my training," Barnes said during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn on Thursday.

Barnes was accompanied in the forum by Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK) Davao chair Rommel Tan and sister Kassandra Barnes, who also competed in Malaysia in girls 12-13 event.

Kassandra, for her part, said she will try her best to win a gold although she admitted that she expects very stiff competition in the nationals considering that powerhouse Manila team is also coming.

"We are expecting over 150 players. Manila alone will have at least 30 karatekas. Manila has eight world champions so they are really the heavy favorites," Tan said.

"But Davao City also has its share of international caliber players just like the Barnes sisters. Laguna players are also coming," he added.

The tournament serves as qualifying for the 5th Asia Pacific Gojukai Karatedo Championships set in Bangkok, Thailand on May 11.

The Summer Milo AAK Karatedo Clinic, meanwhile, is set on April 1 to May 31. A fee of P2000 is inclusive of three-hour session per day. The clinic aims to discover potentials of kids who may become future karatedo champions. (MLSA)

Manguray to defend title vs Baguio foe

ANGELITO Manguray of Davao City will defend his URCC lightweight title for the first time against Honorio Banario of Baguio on April 2 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

Manguray, a dentist by profession, said the title-defense was earlier set in November last year but he suffered a knee injury while training so it had to be postponed.

"I just resumed training last January but I'm ready to defend my title. My opponent is almost half my age. I think he is only 22. Even if I only have one percent chance I will still go for it. But now I'm 100 percent ready to fight," Manguray told members of the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) during their weekly forum at the Tower Inn of Thursday.

The Davao fighter said he is dedicating the fight to his Japanese instructor and to all the victims of the earthquake and tsunami.

Manguray, who holds a sterling 4-0 win-loss professional record, all by knockouts, said his daily training regimen includes two hours of jogging and conditioning in the morning and three hours of sparring in the evening. He attends to his patients at his clinic in between his training schedule.

He spars with boxers, judokas, jiu jitsu and karate. The latter though is his base martial art.

"I've been a karateka since I was a kid so I'm more confident to use it though but since I'm into mixed martial arts I have to learn other arts also," Mangura said.

Manguray hold camp at MetroLifestyle. PC Works is also backing up his stint.

Children's Games slated May 18-21

PREPARATIONS shift to high gear for the Children Games slated May 18-21 in Davao City.

Davao Tourism Operators Association president Charito Andrada said the Games is in coordination with the Evangelista Aquatics Sports Management Inc. (Easmi).

"It aims to promote the city as a premier sports tourism destination considering that when you talk of children athletes, parents will usually accompany them and that's good for tourism because parents will really take a tour in the city," Andrada said in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.

She said the tourism industry will start exploring the world of sports being a great venue to attract domestic tourists and foreigners.

"While the kids play, we will take care of their parents and guardians," Andrada said.

Easmi president Darren Evangelista said events included are basketball 3-on-3, park volleyball, chess, taekwondo, karatedo, swimming and tennis.

Categories in most events will cater to 16 years and below depending on the nature of the sport since others are based on weight categories instead of based on age.

He also said his company being dedicated to youth programs is all-out in supporting the event. (MLSA)
