Davao bets in strong finish

SHERYL Anne Bacus, Dr. Oscar Escudero and Ernesto Rivera finished third place for Team Phoenix-Triad of Davao City in their respective age-groups in the Ironman 70.3 Philippines held recently at the Camarines Sur Watersports Complex.

Bacus finished the 1.9 kilometer, 19 km. bike and 21K run race in six hours, 48 minutes and 12 seconds in the women's 25 to 29 while Escudero, president of the Triathlon Association of Davao (Triad), clocked 07:03:16 in the men's 60 to 64 years old event.

Rivera clocked 07:22:40 in the men's 55-59.

Escudero, gracing the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn yesterday, said Triad sent 15 adult triathletes and three kids to the prestigious competition.

"We are very happy for the support that Phoenix gave us for our Ironman stint. We are all looking forward to compete next year and we hope to bring more members to join as well," Escudero said.

The Triad chief said he never expected to even place as it was his goal to only finish.

"It was and exciting feeling, a learning experience for all of us. We were all first-timers except for Rivera who is already a veteran," Escudero said.

He said the running lap was the most difficult for some 800 participants of the race where Sen. Pia Cayetano and popular movie actor Piolo Pascual were also entered.

"The running part was the hardest since we took off when we were under the blistering heat of the sun from high noon to early afternoon," he said.

No matter how tough the race had been, Escudero said he will start preparing for next year's edition.

"It's really a challenge for myself to compete again next year," he said.
Triad, meanwhile, is preparing to hold its annual Davao City Mayor's Cup race on Nov. 14 at the Baywalk, Queensland.
