WHOPPING hole-in-one cash prizes of P1 million and another P500,000 are up for grabs when the 22nd GET Open Golf Tournament tees off at Sunday at the scenic Apo Golf and Country Club.
Co-chairpersons Felix Maceda and Engineer Boy Ramos, appearing in Thursday's regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, said tee off times for the longest running golf event in Davao are at 5:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Maceda said the P1 million purse is at stake at hole No. 17. "We hope somebody wins this major prize. Other hole-in-one prizes in all par 3s include a motorcycle and LCD TVs, among others," he said.
The P1 million hole-in-one prize is sponsored by the Metropolitan Insurance Company Inc. while the P500,000 prize is sponsored by the Malayan Insurance.
Maceda said this year's edition will be different from the past stagings since gross and net winners of team and individual competitions will receive merchandise items aside from the usual trophies. The runners-up, however, will still receive trophies.
"We expect some 250 golfers from Davao. General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, Luzon, Visayas and Manila. Golfers look forward to the GET golf every year with many raffle prizes to be given away during the awarding rites," Maceda said.
Ramos said some 100 scholars at the Mt. Apo Science Foundation in Eden, Toril benefit from the annual golf tournament.
"The scholars avail of free tuition fees and board and lodging. Some of these scholars are not from Davao City but the foundation had been helping them. A lot of graduates from the school are beneficiaries of the GET Golf," Ramos said.
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte and Vice Mayor Sara Duterte have been invited to grace the ceremonial tee-off along with Mindanao Development Authority chair Jesus Dureza.

Trackster makes Davao proud
CASH-STRAPPED jumper Jonash Melchor bought his and his mom's plane tickets on loan and paraded alone during the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Milo National Open Track and Field Championships at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila.
And Melchor vividly remembers it all. When he was walking down the track and introduced as the lone representative from the Davao Region, only a fellow Davao City athlete who is now based in Manila applauded.
It turned out Melchor produced a mighty performance worthy of a rousing applause and support from his peers back in Davao.
The 19-year-old Melchor, who was forced to compete without the needed support, specifically from his school--the Holy Cross of Davao College--produced one gold medal and a silver in an event participated by the country's top track stars as well as foreign athletes.
Melchor, a Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) varsity scholar, seized the triple jump gold and the long jump silver in the seniors category for a rousing Manila campaign.
"I really didn't get any support from my school, not even for my registration fee of P350. I also sought help from local politicians but I didn't receive any help," Melchor said in the vernacular. "I thank my parents for making a way for me to compete in the National Open despite having to pay off debts incurred for the traveling expenses, fee and meals."
Melchor, who hails from Wangan in Calinan, graced the regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn yesterday and presented his medals. He was not complaining about his plight, but was only revealing the truth behind his triumphant campaign.
He said the De La Salle University juniors team offered to pay for his registration fee before the trackfest began on the condition that he will represent them.
"I am from Davao City so I will represent it. I will not exchange my identity just for P350," Melchor said.
Melchor is no neophyte in big athletics meet as he also held two golds in the 2009 National University Games in Iloilo City, one gold in the 2008 National Prisaa Championships in Zamboanga City, one gold and a silver in the 2009 National Prisaa Championships in Naga City and 2010 Ched National Games in Manila.
He added that DLSU and the Far Eastern University (FEU) offered him scholarships but he rejected them.
"My coach Toto Lacanaria said it won't be wise for me to transfer now as I only have one year left to graduate. He discouraged me from going to Manila as I might just be exploited," Melchor said.
"I respect my coach's advise so I'm staying. I plan to join the Philippine Air Force after graduation and might as well get a chance to make it to the national team," added Melchor, a Business Administration student.
HCDC sports coordinatar Abe Verdeprado, in a phone interview, admitted he wasn't able to extend support for Melchor's stint in Manila.
"If I give to him, I will have to give all the others who will be seeking support as well. We have nothing to give because our budget was already exhausted after competing in the Ched National Games," Verdeprado said.
He, however, assured to give Melchor incentive.
"I'm getting things ready so we can give him due recognition. I'm still waiting for an official result though coming from the organizers. I hope Melchor can give me a copy because that's the basis of granting him a reward," Verdeprado said.
Melchor countered: "Can't I just show him (Verdeprado) the medals. I told him I will bring the medals to him but he won't believe me. My gold and silver wins were written in both local and national papers, is that not enough proof that I indeed won those medals?"
He maintained though that he will continue to train and represent HCDC for the upcoming National Uni-Games in October.

Sunstar Davao: SBC to hold 'Tatlohan' bowlfest at Fairlanes
THE 2nd Tatlohan Bowling Tournament will roll off on Saturday at the Fairlanes Bowling Center along F. Torres St.
This was according to host Sunday Bowlers Club (SBC) president Emie Orteza during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday (May 27).
"The tournament will be held twice a month in partnership with Daciba (Davao City Bowlers Association). SBC and Daciba will take turns in hosting the event. The first Tatlohan was hosted by Daciba so this Saturday will be our turn," Orteza said.
He said both bowling groups agreed to hold the biennial competition in preparation for next year's National Fedbop Open set in Tagum City.

The three-game tournament offers cash prizes of P3,000 to the champion, P2,000 to the second placer, and P1,000 to the third finisher.
"The team with the highest total of pinfalls after three games will be declared champion. We expect over 20 teams competing," Orteza said.

Sunstar Davao: Davao girls ready for Asean chess
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
DAVAO City woodpushers are undergoing rigid training for the 11th Asean Age-Group Chess Championships slated June 4 to 13 in Subic, Olongapo City.
National Age-Group Chess Championship girls under-eight silver medalist Irish Yngayo, girls under-12 bronze medalist Ella Grace Moulic, girls under-14 bronze medalist Dhona Yngayo, and her sister girls under-16 bronze medalist Nikki Erica Yngayo on Thursday said they are preparing hard for their first-ever Asean Age-Group Chess Championships stint.
The four girls graced the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday (May 27) sans National Age-Group Chess boys under-14 champion Austin Jacob Literatus, who is reportedly seeing action in the ongoing Kabasan Open Chess Tournament at the Island Garden City of Samal.
Literatus was a rapid gold medalist in the Asean event held in Vietnam last year.
"Andam nako mudula. Nagsige man ko ug praktis matag adlaw uban akong mga ig-agaw. Wala man ko gikulbaan basta himuon ra nako ang tanan para mudaug (I'm ready to compete. I've been practicing every day with my cousins. I'm not nervous though. I'll just do my best to win)," Irish Yngayo said.
Irish, whose favorite opening is the King's Indian, was referring to cousins Nikki and Dhona, who live in just one compound with the rest of the Yngayos in Toril.
Dhona Yngayo said she trains the whole day for the big event.
"Expectations? I want to be an Asean champion (laughs). I've trained hard for it every day with my sister Nikki and father Eric. I just take a break when I eat. It's good to have coach Henry Fajardo also helping us with our openings," the 12-year-old Dhona Yngayo said.
The 16-year-old Nikki Yngayo incorporates physical training to her preparations.
"I jog at the beach and also swim. Sometimes, I play basketball. Physical training is very helpful for my stamina. It would be useless if I prepare mentally and yet will end up sleepy in the tournament. Being physically fit will also help me be awake in my games," Nikki Yngayo said in the vernacular.
Moulic, meanwhile, said she won't make any predictions.
"I'll do the best I can. I practice with my father and play in the laptop," Moulic said.
While Moulic and the Yngayo sisters admitted they are more confident playing the standard chess, Irish said she is confident playing the standard, rapid, and blitz events all entered in the Asean meet.
The National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) is funding the traveling expenses of the Dabawenyos to Subic as they represent the country to the prestigious spectacle in chess.
