Palaro arnisadors lead Davao to dominating win

THREE Palarong Pambansa champions led Davao City's domination in the 1st Arnis/Escrima Summer League 2010 held at the SM City Davao Events Center over the weekend.

Monec Bucol and Melanie Merto of the A.L. Navarro National High School captured the junior girls bantamweight and extra lightweight golds, respectively, while Maria Estrella Sapar of the Davao City National High School clinched the featherweight gold.

Bucol bested Katma-Davao City bet Nica Enna Liwag, who settled for silver while Merto outclassed General Santos City's Leah Ching Moralde and Pablo Lorenzo National High School's Julia Campomanes.

Sapar stamped her class on Arianne Marie Cinco of Katma-Davao, Almie Rose Claro of General Santos and Gediley Calipes of Panabo City.

Davao City harvested a total of 11 golds, 10 silvers and nine bronze medals while Tagum City had three golds. General Santos City hauled two golds, seven silvers and four bronzes followed by Panabo City's 2-0-2 medal count.

Palaro silver medalist Jan Reysther Letran also of DCNHS pocketed the gold in mid-junior boys pinweight event.

Davao City's gold rush was also courtesy of junior boys flyweight Angelito Gumba Jr., bantamweight Lawrence Christopher Paco, featherweight Johnrie Geldore, extra lightweight Bill Amper, junior girls pinweight Jezebel Morcillo and seniors Paulette Sapar and Manuel Gaviola.

Tagum's golds were from Rofel Pendon (elementary boys category 2), Jhun Riel Declaro (category 4) and Angela Tapin (elementary girls category 2) while General Santos won golds through mid-junior boys pinweight Edward Gian Carlo Leyson and elementary boys category 3 Drazz Petaga.

Junior boys half lightweight John Mark Nermal and extra lightweight Lloyd John Calipes won golds for Panabo.

Arnis Philippines Davao head Mario Palazuelo, who sponsored the event, said they are looking forward to holding a Mindanao Invitational come August.

"We hope we can get sponsorships for this Mindanao-wide competition. We are also sourcing out funds from sports enthusiasts to help us campaign in upcoming national meets," he said during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.

The meet was also supported by Davao City Sports Council Inc. president Peter LaviƱa and Marc Merchandise in cooperation with the Kapatirang Doble Olise Escrima. (MLSA)
