GET golfest tees off at Apo

WHOPPING hole-in-one cash prizes of P1 million and another P500,000 are up for grabs when the 22nd GET Open Golf Tournament tees off at Sunday at the scenic Apo Golf and Country Club.

Co-chairpersons Felix Maceda and Engineer Boy Ramos, appearing in Thursday's regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, said tee off times for the longest running golf event in Davao are at 5:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Maceda said the P1 million purse is at stake at hole No. 17. "We hope somebody wins this major prize. Other hole-in-one prizes in all par 3s include a motorcycle and LCD TVs, among others," he said.

The P1 million hole-in-one prize is sponsored by the Metropolitan Insurance Company Inc. while the P500,000 prize is sponsored by the Malayan Insurance.

Maceda said this year's edition will be different from the past stagings since gross and net winners of team and individual competitions will receive merchandise items aside from the usual trophies. The runners-up, however, will still receive trophies.

"We expect some 250 golfers from Davao. General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, Luzon, Visayas and Manila. Golfers look forward to the GET golf every year with many raffle prizes to be given away during the awarding rites," Maceda said.

Ramos said some 100 scholars at the Mt. Apo Science Foundation in Eden, Toril benefit from the annual golf tournament.

"The scholars avail of free tuition fees and board and lodging. Some of these scholars are not from Davao City but the foundation had been helping them. A lot of graduates from the school are beneficiaries of the GET Golf," Ramos said.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte and Vice Mayor Sara Duterte have been invited to grace the ceremonial tee-off along with Mindanao Development Authority chair Jesus Dureza.
